Bright Red Paper
Portland, OR, USA

“D Is For Dead Sea”
Douglas Jenkins - cello
Eben Dickinson - percussion
Arcellus Sykes - bass
Daniel Enberg - guitar

The music created by the Portland quartet, Bright Red Paper, is what happens when a guitarist brought up on Northwest indie rock matches wits with a classically-trained cellist. Throw into the mixture a jazz obsessed five-string bassist, and a drummer who has played and toured in jazz, reggae, and surf bands and you have a combination that is both calming and explosive. The music is primarily instrumental, though Enberg does sing on occasion. Portland's Willamette Week newspaper has described the band's sound as "chamber music with a penchant for exploring the more turbulent waters of noise rock." Because of the combined big ears of the players, influences of the band would read like a mash-up of the most innovative musicians of the past twenty years: Arvo Pärt, John Tavener, Cuong Vu, Pat Metheny, Modest Mouse and Radiohead, to name a few. Also, all players have a near obsession with hip-hop, though its influence is harder to spot.
