The Mirobolus String Trio is a Toronto-based ensemble founded in 2002 by bassist Bret Higgins. Named after a series of paintings by the French artist Jean Dubuffet, the Trio plays vibrantly eclectic compositions which draw on a diversity of musical traditions, including jazz, modern chamber music, tangos, free improvisation and folk music. The results are a seamless blend of composition and improvisation, appealing and challenging by turns, but always emotionally resonant.
